The discovery of a corduroy road beneath King Street won’t be enough to keep the road closed to traffic through the holiday shopping season, officials say.

Uptown Waterloo business owners were told Wednesday that King remains on-track to open by the end of November.

According to the message sent to business owners, utility and track work will be complete by then.

Some work will still be done in December, including installation of overhead infrastructure and work to build the LRT stop in Waterloo Public Square – however, those projects are not seen as obstacles to reopening the street.

“Barring any further unexpected conditions or construction constraints, we are scheduled to re-open King to two-way traffic by the end of November ... and sidewalks in the area will be completed in time for the Christmas shopping season,” the message reads.

King has been closed between Erb and William streets since February. Work halted for several weeks when a section of corduroy road was found in the area, necessitating archeological documentation.
