KITCHENER -- Brantford police are looking into an incident that left a 17-year-old girl seriously hurt from a gunshot wound.
According to a news release, it happened around 3 a.m. in the area of Waterloo and Pearl Streets.
Police say the victim was first taken to Brantford General Hospital before being transferred to a regional trauma centre.
The girl's injuries are considered serious, but officials add that she is in stable condition.
There was an increased police presence in the area while they investigated.
Police have not said if there are any suspects.
Some people who live in the area said hearing about the shooting is concerning.
"It just worries me, it really does," said Ron Rochholz. "I feel sorry for the young people that are getting wounded and hurt."
"I feel really scared during night times, because at night time you never know," said Pranay Numandla.
However, other in the area said a heavy police presence isn't uncommon.
"I'd always tell my wife that we'd never move to the city, but here we are in the city, and this is where the action is," said John Stanton.
"Living in this area, you kind of get used to it," Courtney Foster said. "This isn't the greatest part of town, so you kind of get get used to cops being around and stuff happening."
