Canadians procrastinating on filing their 2014 income taxes now have five extra days in which to do so.
The Canada Revenue Agency mistakenly sent a note to tax preparers indicating that the filing deadline was May 5, rather than April 30.
As a result, the agency has agreed not to penalize anyone who files their taxes during the first five days of May.
Penalties past that point typically include a fine of five per cent of the taxes owing, with a further one per cent added each month.
There is no filing deadline for anyone due for a tax refund.
In a statement to CTV News, CRA blamed the issue on “human error.”
