Plans to turn a former post office in the Galt area of Cambridge into a library and community space are being scaled back.

That decision was made in July, after bids from companies looking to perform the renovation all came in well above the $12-million budget.

Tuesday night, city councillors got a look at exactly what features will be removed from the project to bring its cost in line with the budgeted amount.

Changes include the elimination of a planned skylight and mezzanine, a smaller outdoor terrace and a decision not to install copper eavestroughs or downspouts.

The clawbacks discussed Tuesday night don’t represent a full $3 million in savings, Coun. Jan Liggett said in an interview.
