Officials in Huron County have encountered the area’s first rabid animal in eight years.
The Huron County Health Unit says a skunk found in the Blyth area last week has tested positive for the rabies virus.
The health unit is reminding people to get their pets immunized against the virus and avoid contact with wild animals.
As of Nov. 30, there had been 275 confirmed cases of rabies in Ontario, with the bulk occurring in and around Hamilton.
The virus had not been known to have spread as far west as Huron County, although it has been found this year in two cows and one skunk in Perth County.
