A cow on a Listowel-area dairy farm was one of 29 animals in Ontario to test positive for rabies in November.

Health Canada released its latest look at the spread of the rabies virus Tuesday. The 29 confirmed cases is roughly in line with what authorities have been seeing since last December, when a rabies outbreak was discovered in the Hamilton area.

Public health officials in Perth County have said that the cow likely came into contact with a rabid wild animal.

There have been three other confirmed cases of bovine rabies in Canada this year – one in Saskatchewan in May, and two in Manitoba in January.

Last December, the rabies virus was found in a calf in the Ellice area south of Milverton.

In addition to the cow, rabies was detected in 15 raccoons and 13 skunks in Ontario in November.

Those findings bring the total number of confirmed cases in animals in Ontario this year to 275.

All other provinces and territories combined have reported 97 cases.
