Two days after a fire flared up, the Six Nations Landfill remains closed to the public.

According to a press release from Six Nations Council, a fire was reported at the Fourth Line facility Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke, flaming chemical runoff and multiple explosions – but were able to extinguish the fire 12 minutes after it was first reported.

A hazardous material team was then brought in, as the fire had caused chemicals from paint cans, compressed air cylinders and other containers to mix together.

As of Friday afternoon, the chemical runoff had been contained but firefighters continued to monitor the situation in case the fire reignites.

If that were to happen, officials said, residents living within 1.6 kilometres of the landfill would be ordered to leave their homes immediately.

A temporary waste disposal site has been set up across the street from the landfill, at the Weken Electronics Plaza.

Only household garbage is being accepted at that site. Officials recommend residents keep their recycling, hazardous materials, construction debris and other items at home until the landfill reopens.
