Police have set up a command post at a Cambridge plaza as they search for a pickup truck believed to have been involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash.

The crash happened around 6 p.m. Saturday, on Cedar Street west of St. Andrews Street.

According to Waterloo Regional Police, a man was hit by a white pickup truck, then hit by a vehicle that was making a left turn into the plaza at 130 Cedar Street.

The man, a 49-year-old Cambridge resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been made public.

While the second vehicle to hit the man remained at the scene, the pickup truck left before police arrived.

“We believe that we’re looking for a 2002 Ford F-250 pickup truck, white in colour, with damage to the driver’s side headlight assembly as well as the driver’s side mirror,” Insp. Mike Haffner said Monday.

“Most importantly, it has a cap on the back of the vehicle as well.”

The truck’s grill may also have been damaged on the driver’s side.

“We ask the driver of this vehicle to call police (and) turn themselves in, so we can complete the investigation and provide some closure to the family,” Haffner said.

Police are urging anyone with information about the truck to contact investigators at 519-653-7700 ext. 8666 or call Crime Stoppers.

They also plan to spend a lot of time in the area around the plaza this week, speaking with people who live and work nearby to see if they noticed anything Saturday evening or might have other useful information.
