A series of thefts from community mailboxes has both Guelph Police and Wellington County OPP on the hunt for suspects.

OPP say they’ve received reports of community mailboxes being broken into over the past week in both Centre Wellington and Guelph-Eramosa townships, just outside Guelph city limits.

Another pair of mailbox thefts were reported Wednesday in the City of Guelph proper.

In those cases, police say, all the mail was removed from two community boxes, affecting 29 Canada Post customers.

“All the mail that would have been in those boxes has been stolen,” Const. Gord Woods tells CTV News.

Due to the proximity of the boxes and the methods used to gain access to them, police believe the four thefts could be used.

Police don’t have any suspects at this point, but say it’s possible whoever broke into the boxes was looking for personal information they could use to help facilitate identity theft.

“It is tax season. There could be GST cheques coming out. There could be T5s, T4s – anything for income tax purposes,” says Woods.

“These are all valuable documents that might have personal information that could have been stolen.”

Affected residents will be notified of the thefts via a letter from Canada Post.

Canada Post did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
