Peter Martin’s 25-year career as a restaurateur in downtown Kitchener has come to an end.

The announcement that his The 41 restaurant has closed came Wednesday afternoon in a press release from the Downtown Kitchener Business Improvement Association.

“The 41 and Peter himself are downtown Kitchener icons,” said BIA executive director Shannon Weber in the release.

“We are sad to see them go but appreciate and honour the years of dedication to food and hospitality in the heart of Kitchener.”

Martin opened his first local restaurant, Peter Martin’s 20 King, on King Street East in 1988.

He moved down the street to King Street West in 2002, opening Peter Martin’s 41, which was later renamed The 41.

Details about who purchased the restaurant and what the location will be used for were not available, but the release said Martin plans to “ease into retirement.”
