Waterloo Regional Police say a ten-year-old Kitchener boy suffered serious injuries when a bottle bomb exploded Sunday afternoon.

Police say the boy and his friends assembled a concoction in a two litre pop bottle. It exploded a short time later.

"Shards of plastic were embedded in this youth's face," Inspector Kevin Thaler of Waterloo Regional Police says "He required medical attention." The child required a number of stitches to close the wound. The exploding plastic missed his eyes. Thaler says there is concern the boy may have permanent scars.

Police are now issuing what they are calling a community warning about the dangers of bottle bombs.

Over the weekend two other bottle bombs were found near elementary schools in both Kitchener and Waterloo.

A bottle bomb is created when chemicals from common household cleaners are mixed together in a pop bottle then capped.

Thaler wants parents to talk to their children about the homemade devices. "They are very powerful, the potential to be very powerful."
