A serious collision outside Hagersville, south of Brantford, left one man dead and two women in hospital.

Police have now identified the man who died as 26-year-old Mathieu Guimond, of Edmunston, New Brunswick.

The crash occurred around 7:45 a.m., at the intersection of Sandusk Road and Concession Road 12 just west of Hagersville.

In its aftermath, an SUV was flipped on its roof in a ditch along the road, while a pickup truck was submerged in a water-filled quarry metres away from the SUV.

The truck stayed underwater from several hours as authorities figure out how to bring it back to land.

Around 4 p.m., it was hoisted out of the water by a heavy crane, with the aid of a police dive team in the water.

Police said Guimond's body was found inside the black 2014 GMC Denali, in the driver’s seat.

The two occupants of the SUV, a 52-year-old female and the passenger, a 22-year-old female both residents of Haldimand County were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police believe speed was a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation.

Sanchuk said the incident should be a stark reminder to drivers to pay attention while behind the wheel, and take as much time as necessary to ensure no oncoming traffic before proceeding from a stop sign.

“We need to slow down,” he said.

“It could make the difference between life and death.”
