The former Schneiders plant in Kitchener will be marketed across the country in the hopes of attracting a potential buyer.
Commercial real estate firm CBRE will lead the marketing effort, which was announced Wednesday.
“This is a prime location and it will certainly attract broad interest,” said J. Peter Whatmore, senior vice-president of CBRE Southwestern Ontario, in a news release.
Whatmore pointed to the facility’s location along the future Ion LRT line as a prime benefit for any interested owner.
Operations at the Courtland Avenue plant stopped in February, more than 90 years after John Metz Schneider first opened the factory.
Since then, the building has been undergoing a decommissioning process, with equipment and materials sorted through and removed from the facility.
CBRE is working with the City of Kitchener and current owners Maple Leaf Foods to sell the property, with a focus on finding a buyer interested in redeveloping the 27-acre site.
Wednesday’s press release boasted that the property is “ideally suited for mixed-use commercial and residential development.”
A list price for the property has not yet been set.
