Cambridge swimmer Lesley Burton-Zehr has postponed her attempt to swim 75-kilometers across Lake Huron until next week.

She was supposed to depart from Harbour Beach Michigan on Saturday but weather forecasters are calling for possible thunderstorms, high winds, heavy rain and large waves on Lake Huron.

Burton-Zehr hopes to become the second person after Vicki Keith to swim Lake Huron solo.

She is a former lifeguard and is doing her swim to raise awareness for drowning prevention.

Meanwhile, five women who set out for a five-day relay swim across the length of Lake Ontario say they're relieved to be on solid ground.

The swimmers arrived on shore in Whitby, Ont., today after a gruelling swim that included two-metre-high waves and icy water.

Originally the team planned to swim from Kingston to Burlington, but the end came sooner than expected due to safety concerns including the dropping temperature of the water.

The women are hoping to raise $300,000 for Plan International's 'Because I am a girl' campaign which promotes rights and opportunities for girls in Canada and abroad.

The team estimated that they had reached $18,000 by Saturday.

All of the women -- who are aged 18 to 61 -- are accomplished long-distance solo swimmers.

Forty-eight-year-old Nicole Mallette says her teammates -- Colleen Shields, Samantha Whiteside, Rebekah Boscariol and Mona Sharari -- all finished the last kilometre together.
