It’s not often that southern Ontario sees thunderstorms in March – especially not ones accompanied by a significant amount of hail.

But that’s what happened Wednesday, as several bands of showers raced across the province.

The storms began during the late afternoon hours, and moved west to east through southern Ontario.

Many people took to social media to share photos of the storm, particularly the hail which fell steadily in some areas for a period of time.

The storm was blamed for a number of power outages, including ones leaving the communities of Rockwood and Arthur in the dark for several hours.

In Kitchener, power was out to 1,500 people in the Centreville-Chicopee area.

Crews were seen dealing with downed hydro poles at the nearby intersection of Fairway Road and Morgan Avenue.

Downed poles and dangling wires were also spotted on King Street East, near Sportsworld Drive.

Environment Canada says it has received few reports of damage from the storm, with one of the most notable being damage to farm buildings northwest of Mount Forest.

Two houses under construction were damaged in Brampton, while wind gusts of 96 km/h were recorded in Toronto and Sarnia.

Grey County OPP reported that high winds brought down a tree and hydro wires outside a house in Flesherton, sparking a fire that damaged the home.

An Environment Canada survey team was dispatched to the Mount Forest area Thursday to assess the damage in that region.
