Waterloo fire crews were called overnight to battle a major fire at St. Jacobs Market located just outside the City of Waterloo.

Fire officials say a call came in at 1:45 a.m. Monday morning about a fire at the main market building at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market.

The 24,000 square foot wood construction building houses around 60 market vendors.

Fire crews worked quickly to control the blaze and keep it from spreading to other areas of the market.

Woolwich Mayor Todd Cowan says the community is in shock.  “The St. Jacobs Market is an iconic site in the Township and is an established, well known destination for tourism across the Province.”

Cowan says “the Township of Woolwich will work with the community and the owners to help re-establish the market as soon as possible.”

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
