After a nearly-two-week delay sparked by safety concerns, demolition work is set to resume at the site of the former Mayfair Hotel and Hymmen Hardware.

A City of Kitchener spokesperson said Monday that crews spent the day “removing debris and completing prep work,” and planned to return to demolition at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The last day any demolition work took place at the corner of King and Young streets was May 27.

That day, the Ministry of Labour issued stop work issues due to concerns about asbestos and the potential for bricks to fall – orders which were lifted late last week.

The Mayfair Hotel was ordered demolished in April due to concerns of an imminent collapse.

Its neighbour, the former Hymmen Hardware property on King, was later ordered to be taken down as well due to concerns about a wall shared between the two properties.
