Demolition work on the top floors of the former Mayfair Hotel continued Wednesday.

At times, crowds watching the work swelled into the dozens.

At other times, the crowds were sparse and it seemed to be almost business as usual in downtown Kitchener.

That was despite the continuing closure of King Street to vehicles between Ontario and Gaukel streets – a closure expected to last for the rest of the week.

Young Street is also closed to traffic at King, while both streets are also blocked off to pedestrians due to safety concerns stemming from the demolition.

The 110-year-old hotel and the building on King were ordered demolished last month due to engineers’ concerns of a sudden collapse.

Once the top storeys of the Mayfair have been fully taken down, crews will begin tearing down the upper portion of an adjoining structure fronting King Street.

Both buildings are expected to be fully demolished within two weeks.

The owner of the property has agreed to convert the site into a parkette until redevelopment gets underway.
