Crews may have been working at the site of the former Mayfair Hotel and Hymmen Hardware buildings for the past week, but they weren’t doing demolition.

The Ministry of Labour issued stop work orders on May 27, amid concerns about asbestos and potentially falling bricks at the site.

The orders were lifted late Thursday afternoon.

More scaffolding and shoring work is expected to be done Friday, with demolition likely resuming – and, officials hope, finishing – next week.

King Street has been closed to traffic between Gaukel since May 19.

City officials hope they will be able to reopen it for the weekend – even if it means they’ll have to put the $1,000 bill.
