Three school board trustees call for town hall following director of education's departure
Three Waterloo Region District School Board trustees are joining the call for a town hall after a sudden shake up within the board.
School board staff received a notice in early December announcing jeewan chanicka was no longer the board’s director of education. The notice did not explain the reason behind the change, but said, “We thank him for his leadership and contributions and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
The notice also announced Scott Miller would be taking on the responsibilities of interim director of education immediately.
At the time, CTV News reached out to the board about the announcement, but they declined to comment and did not provide a reason for the departure.
Since then, a columnist with the Waterloo Region Record, Luisa D’Amato, called for a town hall meeting in hopes of getting some answers to the many questions that remain unanswered.
On Thursday, three school board trustees backed her request by publishing their own letter to social media.
The letter signed by Bill Cody, Cindy Watson and Mike Ramsay reads in part, “As individual members of the Board, we support Luisa D’Amato’s call for a regional Town Hall to obtain local public input as we prepare to make the necessary decisions that should lead us to re-calibrate our Board’s goals. And we will be putting forward a motion to that effect at the first opportunity.”
According to the school board’s website, a Committee of the Whole meeting is scheduled for Jan. 13 and a board meeting is scheduled for Jan. 27.
All board and Committee of the Whole meetings are open to the public and are live-streamed. Recordings are posted to YouTube the day after the meeting.
Editor's note: chanicka doesn't use capital letters in his name intentionally.
