Wherever in southern Ontario you were as Wednesday night gave way to the Thursday morning commute, taking Highway 401 was a risky proposition.
Outside London, the highway closed around 10 p.m. Wednesday between Highbury Avenue and Veterans Memorial Parkway.
That closure was to facilitate firefighting efforts at London Dairy Farms, where the flames continued to burn, albeit under control, well into the morning.
The 401 was reopened in that stretch around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, although the fire remained active at that time.
Less than half an hour later, two of the highway’s eastbound lanes were blocked at Avenue Road in Toronto due to a three-vehicle crash and rollover.
Two people were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries, and the lanes reopened around 9 a.m.
Shortly after 10 a.m., another crash closed ramps from the 401 eastbound and Highway 427 southbound to Eglinton Avenue in Toronto.
Seven vehicles were involved in that collision, and four people were taken to hospital including one woman with serious injuries.
The 401 ramp reopened early Thursday afternoon.
