Traffic headaches in Cambridge are just beginning.

Preliminary work is already underway on Franklin Boulevard in Cambridge to add nine roundabouts to the street.

Regional council has approved nearly $12 million for the first phase of this project, which includes three roundabouts in the south end of Franklin.

Six more roundabouts will be built next year. Two roundabouts were planned near Saint Benedict’s high school however they have been put off until more research can be done.

Mayor Doug Craig is asking Cambridge residents to be patient during the construction.

“We know there’s going to be delays. This is going to be this season and partly next season but we will have a better system, better roads, and of course overall better safety in terms of the roundabouts themselves,” Craig said.

A Cambridge firm will do all the work. Construction is set to begin on May 25.
