A two-year-old child is being treated for injuries in a Hamilton hospital after being attacked by a Great Dane in Guelph.

According to Guelph Police, the attack occurred around 10 a.m. Thursday on Vanier Drive, near College Avenue and the Hanlon Parkway.

The child received puncture wounds to its upper back and stomach, as well as injuries to its right ear and left upper arm.

Police say the owners of the Great Dane were not present, and the dog was being walked by a relative of the two-year-old.

The Humane Society later removed the dog from the scene.
