The top sports award in Waterloo Region was presented at the Dan Snyder Arena in Elmira. Eight local athletes were in the running for the 13th annual Civitan Athlete of the Year Award. The honour recognizes outstanding performances in 2010.
The Ice Dance team of Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje take home the award this year. They were not in attendance at Wednesday night's festivities, so Poje's father Bill accepted the award on their behalf.
Poje and Weaver did make an appearance however, as they addressed the crowd via Skype.
The Waterloo skaters enjoyed a terrific season in 2010. They won gold at the Four Continents Championship and took home bronze from the Canadian nationals. Weaver and Poje finished 2010 ranked third in Canada and sixth in the world.
