Police are now among the groups looking into the case of a woman who worked as a nurse at a long-term care home in Paris despite never registering with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

CTV News first reported last week that Laura Erskine had been placed on leave by Park Lane Terrace in Paris, after administrators there discovered they had no paperwork that proved Erskine was a registered nurse.

Now, they say, they’re certain that Erskine was never qualified to do the job she was hired for.

Erskine was trained as a nurse. She graduated from Conestoga College’s nursing program in the spring of 2014.

Anyone wanting to work as a nurse in Ontario must register with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Erskine never did.

Park Lane Terrace is continuing its own investigation into Erskine, while the College of Nurses of Ontario, Ontario’s Ministry of Health, Erskine’s union and the Ontario Provincial Police are all looking into the situation as well.

Park Lane Terrace wasn’t the only seniors’ home to hire Erskine despite her having never registered as a nurse.

She also worked at Queensview Retirement Community, which is also in Paris. The general manager of that facility declined to answer any questions from CTV News.

A former nurse at Queensview says she was hired at the same time as Erskine in June 2014.

The nurse, who did not want to be identified, says that she was concerned someone not registered to be a nurse was giving out medication to people who trusted her.

“It’s really mind-boggling,” she said.

The nurse says she raised her concerns with management at Queensview, but nothing was done about it.

She also says she contacted the College of Nurses of Ontario. Asked by CTV News if they had been aware of Erskine’s situation for two years, a college spokesperson did not specifically respond to the question.
