Guelph just may be the poster child for keeping vehicles locked.

City police say they checked 1,263 vehicles parked at Stone Road Mall over the weekend, as part of a traffic safety initiative.

Of all those vehicles, only 18 were found to be unlocked.

Police caution that locking vehicles isn’t always enough to deter thieves, as some locked cars are broken into if valuables are left in plain view.

On that score, Stone Road Mall shoppers didn’t score quite as well.

Officers spotted valuables in 199 of the locked vehicles and nine of the unlocked vehicles.
