Waterloo Regional Police were called Friday afternoon to two incidents at two banks on opposite ends of the same street.

First, shortly after 2 p.m., police were called to the CIBC at Fischer-Hallman and Westmount roads in Kitchener in response to a robbery.

According to police, a man entered the bank and demanded money from a teller, but was not given any.

No injuries were reported, and no weapon was seen – although the man did allegedly claim to have one.

Police describe the man as being white, approximately 20 years old and 5’11” tall, with a thin build and facial scruff.

He was said to be wearing a dark winter jacket with fur around the hood, a grey flat cap, dark pants and white, high-top shoes.

A police search of the area, which included a canine unit, did not turn up any suspects.

Later, before 4 p.m., police were called to the TD Canada Trust branch at Fischer-Hallman Road and Columbia Street in Waterloo.

A suspicious package prompted a visit from the WRPS explosives disposal unit and an evacuation of the bank and surrounding area.

The item turned out to be a piece of luggage containing a laptop computer and other personal belongings – apparently left behind inadvertently – and the bank was reopened.
