Morriston residents’ longstanding call for Highway 6 to bypass their hamlet is making its way to Queen’s Park.

A petition with more than 2,000 names asking the government to add the bypass to the province’s five-year highway construction plan was presented to Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott on Friday morning.

The Ministry of Transportation approved a bypass plan in the late 1990s and completed an environmental assessment in 2009, but the project has languished since then.

“They have the route plan, they have the environmental study done, but we just can’t get onto the five-year plan,” says Morriston resident Glenna Smith.

“What’s the hold-up? We’ve love to know. They tell us it’s (because of) money, but somehow I think our township’s due for a little of their money.”

According to a 2009 traffic count, more than 22,000 vehicles pass through Morriston each day.

Residents say that makes the road unsafe.

"It's not safe here for kids to ride their bicycles or even go for a walk," says resident Dave Haley.

Arnott says he hopes to present the petition in the legislature next week and ultimately get the highway on the province's five-year plan.
