Kitchener firefighters say an early morning fire on Sunday is suspicious. It broke out at a Woolwich Street home around 3 a.m.

“The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called due to the suspicious nature of the fire,” said Jeff Wildfang, with Kitchener Fire Prevention.

“There is significant damage to the structure in the rear. The main floor has collapsed into the basement so there is some structural concern for us at this point,” Wildfang said.

In order to do a proper investigation, firefighters say they will need to bring in heavy equipment to remove the roof,

“We need to pump some water out of the basement to help aid in the investigation and stabilize the building,” added Wildfang.

No one was injured in the blaze. Firefighters say no one was home when they responded.

The house is uninhabitable. Damage is estimated at between $150,000 and $200,000.

Firefighters say it will be some time before they can say what caused the blaze.
