Elementary students in the Waterloo Region District School Board won’t be getting report cards at the end of the month, board officials announced Tuesday.

Instead, those 40,000 or so students will be given a letter explaining which grade they will be placed in come September.

In a letter sent home to parents, board officials said they had explored “every possible option” before determining that they couldn’t provide the report cards.

Because of job action by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, teachers are not inputting marks into the electronic system used for report cards.

They are grading students and submitting those grades to school administrators – albeit without comments – but say they are leaving the inputting of the grades to principals and vice-principals.

“We rely on teachers to provide a complete report card including comments,” the letter from the WRDSB reads.

“We also rely on teacher professional judgement to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the report card.”

The letters from the WRDSB will also include attendance data and other information.

They will be sent home on June 22.

Elsewhere in our coverage area, the Upper Grand District School Board announced a similar decision Monday.

The Avon Maitland District School Board and Grand Erie District School Board have said they will provide elementary students with report cards.
