Parents of children in elementary schools in Guelph, Wellington County or Dufferin County won’t be getting report cards on their kids’ progress this month.

Board officials announced Monday that instead of report cards, parents would be issued ‘letters of promotion’ – which will only state which grade the child will be placed in for September.

“The board shares the disappointment of parents and students who find a report card that sums up the year’s information and includes grade placement for the coming year to be valuable and important,” board chair Mark Bailey said in a press release.

As part of their job action, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario-represented teachers have stopped inputting marks into an electronic system.

While teachers have been assessing and grading students, administrators say the work of putting the data into the system is too much to be done by principals and vice-principals.

Board officials say parents with questions about their kids’ education should contact teachers directly.

The Avon Maitland District School Board has already said it plans to send elementary students home with report cards, as does the Grand Erie District School Board.

Officials at the Waterloo Region District School Board plan to announce their plans Tuesday.
