More than 30 people will be employed by a mobile payment company expanding its footprint in Waterloo Region.

Square first opened up a workspace in the region last summer.

Last September, Square CEO Jack Dorsey – who also co-founded Twitter – told a University of Waterloo audience that the company would open a permanent office in the area.

That office has now been made official.

The company announced Tuesday that it will set up shop in the McPherson Centre on King Street in downtown Kitchener later this spring.

“We are thrilled to be part of Kitchener-Waterloo’s thriving and talented tech community,” Square executive Demetrios Marantis said in a press release.

Square has developed technology to allow credit card payments to be made via smartphone.

Kitchener marks the company’s first permanent office in Canada.
