First, the good news.

After months of construction, Franklin Boulevard is reopening to normal traffic.

Less positive – at least to some drivers in Cambridge approached by CTV Kitchener on Friday – is that six roundabouts now dot the street at major intersections between Pinebush Road and Main Street.

“I hate them. They’re useless,” said Marilyn Gummerson.

Gummerson said her issues with roundabouts stemmed from people – herself included – not knowing how to navigate them.

Julie Chaves likewise said she was concerned about people not knowing how to use them.

She said she was generally in favour of roundabouts, but wasn’t sure busy Franklin Boulevard was the right place for a few of them.

“I don’t think it’s going to work out,” she said.

Bridge Macintosh, on the other hand, spoke much more positively about the new circles.

“I just love them,” she said. “They are so easy to get around. It’s faster.”

Saturday morning, weather-permitting, Franklin will close from south of Savage Drive to south of Main for final touches to be put on the roundabouts. It will reopen Monday morning.

Next weekend, similar work will be done from south of Savage to south of Clyde Road.

Work will start next year on roundabouts at three more intersections on Franklin.

Two roundabouts are planned beyond that – bringing the total to 11.
