What was expected to be a nice nap in a cool fireplace turned into an unexpected road trip for a lizard in Wellington County.

The lizard – named after a Harry Potter character who, convention dictates, must not be named – went missing in June from its home in Wellington North Township.

Its owners searched around the property but were unable to find the blue-tongued skink, and the case grew as cold as the reptile’s blood.

That changed Monday night, when the skink suddenly appeared at a home in neighbouring Mapleton Township.

Earlier in the summer, the Mapleton homeowner had purchased an electric fireplace online.

Its seller was living in Wellington North – and it’s believed the skink was transported inside the fireplace, unbeknownst to its previous or new owners.

Police say the Mapleton homeowner had noticed its dogs were behaving strangely and some food would occasionally go missing, but believed their grandchildren were responsible.

The lizard has now been reunited with its owner and is said to be in good spirits.
