A Delhi man learned the hard way that leaving an ice hut abandoned on Lake Erie can be a costly endeavour.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says they were notified in March of several huts falling through the ice at Long Point Bay as the weather began to warm up.

The huts’ owners were contacted and told to remove their huts.

One hut, investigators found, was displaying a false registration number.

Its owner was identified as Gregory Pursley.

Pursley did not remove his hut, an MNRF press release says, and thus it ended up falling into the ice.

Last week, a judge fined Pursley $1,500 for abandoning his hut.
