Should corporations and unions be able to donate to local political candidates?

They’re currently allowed to, but the province has signalled an interest in re-examining the issue.

Monday night, Kitchener councillors added their voices to the mix, voting to recommend a ban on all such donations at the city level.

Coun. Scott Davey introduced the motion, which received support from Mayor Berry Vrbanovic and a majority of councillors.

In introducing the motion, Davey described it as “leveling the playing field” for citizens when it comes to influencing the decisions of elected officials.

The city cannot implement that change on its own. It must be done by the province through the Municipal Elections Act.
