A section of downtown Brantford was closed down by police Monday night.

According to Brantford Police, a call came in around 6 p.m. reporting a man in the area of a Market Street South plaza, possibly with a weapon.

Officers responded and began negotiating with the man, as several streets in the area were shut down.

After two hours of negotiations, police say, the man left the area in a vehicle.

A pursuit ensued, heading along Highway 403 toward Hamilton and then Highway 52.

On Highway 52, the man’s vehicle allegedly crashed into a police vehicle, ending the pursuit.

Police say they then found the weapon, which turned out to be a replica firearm.

A 39-year-old Brantford man is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

No injuries were reported.
