A 'shelter in place' order has now been lifted for the Dutton Drive area of Waterloo, as city officials say the fire at an under-construction LRT maintenance facility is now under control.

Fire crews were called to the facility just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Officials with Waterloo Fire Rescue said they had three crews at the site, fighting a fire that started in the building’s roof.

Roads were also closed in the area, including the intersection of Dutton and Weber Street.

By 7:45 p.m., fire officials said they had mostly extinguished the fire and remained on-scene only to battle hotspots and flare-ups.

An investigation into the cause of the fire isn't expected to happen until Tuesday.

Once complete, the Dutton Drive site is expected to be used to store and perform maintenance work on the vehicles for Ion, Waterloo Region’s light rail transit system.
