Temperatures in Waterloo Region will fall to -5 C by Thursday morning – but with a little bit of luck, they may not be that low again for a long, long time.

Wednesday morning, a low of -8.5 C was recorded at Region of Waterloo International Airport on Wednesday morning, shattering the mark for the coldest April 16 in the area.

It replaced a record of -6.7 C that had stood since 1928.

Similar records were broken across the province, but according to Environment Canada, none had lasted for as long as Kitchener’s.

Although temperatures will again fall below zero overnight, that will be followed by a quick warm-up through the day.

Forecast highs for Thursday are 8 C in northern Wellington County as well as Dufferin County, 10 C in Waterloo Region, Guelph, Grey-Bruce and Huron-Perth, and 12 C in Oxford, Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk counties.

Looking ahead, forecasts for Waterloo Region call for highs of 10 C on Friday, 12 C on Saturday and 15 C on Sunday – although each day of Easter weekend brings with it a chance of rain.
