A crossing guard was taken to hospital Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle in Kitchener.

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Queen’s Boulevard, near Spadina Avenue.

Waterloo Regional Police say the crossing guard was walking across the road, with kids waiting to cross, when he was hit.

“He was almost in the middle of the lane, we believe, when he was struck,” said Const. Richard Adams.

“He went up on the hood of the car, and rolled off onto the roadway.”

The guard, a 60-year-old man, slipped into unconsciousness and was taken to nearby St. Mary’s General Hospital with undetermined injuries.

The driver of the vehicle faces a Highway Traffic Act charge of failing to stop for a crossing guard.

Police say the driver told them that the sun was in his eyes and he did not see the guard.
