Students at Conestoga College won’t be receiving special discounted bus passes anytime soon.

A school referendum held earlier this month resulted in more than 57 per cent of students responding negatively to the question “Are you in favour of a mandatory universal transit bus pass?”

The proposal was for all students at the school’s Doon campus to pay $245 per year for unlimited use of Grand River Transit buses.

Regional councillors have already approved a plan to hire 11 bus drivers and purchase nine buses to improve service around the campus.

It is not clear if those changes will still take place given the students’ dismissal of the proposal.

A total of 3,730 votes were cast, representing 31 per cent of those eligible to take part in the referendum.
