Several police cruisers and a forensic identification van caused a stir among residents of a Kitchener neighbourhood Wednesday night.

Waterloo Regional Police say the deployment was in response to an incident that began with a stolen car driving dangerously around the city.

Around 6 p.m., the Cadillac vehicle was allegedly stolen from a parking lot at King and Union streets.

Police received multiple complaints about its driver over the following 30 minutes, but didn’t catch up with it until it was in a parking lot on Westwood Drive – with the driver still inside.

“When the officer approached the suspect in the vehicle, the suspect was not compliant with the officer,” said police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.

“The suspect tried to escape using the vehicle (and) rammed some vehicles in the area including the police cruiser.”

As events unfolded, the man also allegedly drove the Cadillac into a police officer.

“The officer had to take evasive action,” said Heinzel.

Following a chase, police say, the driver was found in a nearby apartment building and taken into custody.

A 40-year-old Kitchener man is charged with vehicle theft, dangerous driving, aggravated assault with a weapon on a police officer and other offences.

The police officer received minimal injuries, Heinzel said.
