A judge will determine whether Sandy Shantz can remain as mayor of Woolwich Township, officials said Wednesday.

In an email to the media, Woolwich clerk Val Hummel said that Shantz “will not be fulfilling her mayoral responsibilities” pending the outcome of a legal proceeding.

The proceeding, Hummel said, is sought due to Shantz breaching the Municipal Elections Act by not filing an audit of her election expenses before the March 27 deadline.  The audit of her campaign finances was submitted last week, showing she spent more than $10,000 on the campaign.

No court date has been set.

Shantz won Woolwich’s mayoralty last October, in a landslide victory over three other candidates.

Finishing fourth was incumbent mayor Todd Cowan, who faces fraud charges in connection with allegations that he billed both the township and the Region of Waterloo for the same expenses.

The township will not take any further action around its mayoralty until a court ruling is delivered, Hummel said.
