Woolwich Township Mayor Todd Cowan says he’s repaid the Region of Waterloo $2,700 for inappropriate expenses.

Cowan said Monday that he submitted mileage and convention expenses to both his township and the region.

“Expense claims had been submitted at both places and not caught,” he told CTV News.

“It was an error on my behalf.”

Cowan informed township councillors of the issue at a Monday night meeting.

They voted to refer the matter to Waterloo Regional Police and put new procedures in place in its own organization.

“We’ve put some checks and balances in place so this won’t happen again,” Cowan said.

Cowan said he was unaware of the issue until it was brought to his attention by staff.
