City of Guelph mourns staff member struck by bus
The City of Guelph is mourning the death of a city staff member after he was struck by a bus Wednesday afternoon.
The crash happened on Wyndham Street North near Carden Street -- steps away from City Hall.
The pedestrian, 49-year-old Fergus man, was pronounced dead a short time after the collision.
“Our focus is on supporting the employee’s family, colleagues, and all city staff who have been impacted by this terrible event, including the transit operator,” said Tara Baker, Chief Administrative Officer, in a statement to CTV News on Thursday.
Baker said, out of respect of the employee’s loved ones, they will not be disclosing his name.
Collision details
Police said they received a call about the crash, just before 1:37 p.m.
“The initial report was that a pedestrian was crossing the road when that person was struck by a bus that was making a turn,” explained Scott Tracey, the Guelph Police Service’s media relations coordinator.
Tracey said the pedestrian was extricated from under the bus by firefighters from the Guelph Fire Department.
No one on the bus was physically hurt.
“It’s obviously a very traumatic event. Anyone who witnessed it or was on the bus at the time and may have witnessed it from that perspective – our Victim Services Wellington staff are available for people to reach out and get some assistance in dealing with what they witnessed.”
On Wednesday evening, police said it is too early to know if charges are warranted.
