If you have a weapon you’re looking to dispose of, Waterloo Regional Police would be more than happy to take it off your hands.

Just don’t bring it into the police station unannounced.

“If they call the normal police line (and) ask for a pickup, we’ll arrange a pickup at their convenience,” Staff Sgt. Eugene Fenton said in an interview.

For the second straight year, police are running a weapons amnesty program during the month of November.

Turn in your unwanted weapons, and officers won’t press any charges relating to their possession or storage.

“If we have reason to believe that a weapon may have been used in a serious crime, we may follow up that,” Fenton said.

Last year’s amnesty netted nearly 350 weapons, and 12,600 rounds of ammunition.

No charges were laid relating to any of those weapons, Fenton said.
