People and their pets are being asked to stay away from Belwood Lake.

That’s because blue-green algae has been found in the reservoir north of Fergus.

The algae produces a toxin that can cause illness if swallowed.

Ken Linwood, with the Grand River Conservation Authority, says the hot and dry weather is to blame.

“We’re certainly seeing warmer water temperatures, we’re seeing lower water levels this year. That paired with some phosphorous and some nutrients in the water certainly caused those algae blooms to grow more significantly.”

Belwood Lake is a popular spot for swimmers, boaters and picnickers.

The GRCA and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health have posted the following warning:

  • Don’t swim in the lake
  • Keep children and pets away from the algae
  • Avoid contact with the algae
  • Don’t eat fish from the lake
  • Don’t use the water for drinking or any other purpose
  • Boating is allowed, but boaters should avoid touching the algae

There is a separate swimming area in an old quarry which is not affected by the algae.

There have been no reported illnesses.

Signs have been posted at several locations around the reservoir.
