The man attacked and left seriously hurt on Lancaster Street in Kitchener last week has died of his injuries.
Dylan Debreau, 23, was pronounced dead in hospital Thursday night, Waterloo Regional Police said Friday.
His cause of death has been deemed to be blunt force trauma.
Debreau had been airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital last week, after being attacked in the area of Lancaster and Arnold streets.
Last weekend, a local man of no fixed address was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
“As a result of the death of the victim, the charges have been upgraded to manslaughter,” said police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.
Family members say Debreau had only been in Kitchener for a few weeks, having moved there to be with his girlfriend and five-month-old son.
Much of his time in hospital was spent on life support – in an attempt to save his heart, as his parents knew Debreau wanted to donate his organs.
“It was a lot of pain through the week, to hold onto him,” father Steve Levesque said.
“I know Dylan’s looking down now, and he’s very happy and proud.”
While Debreau’s heart could not be donated, family members say other organs were given to seven people.
Police say Debreau and Bush knew each other and the assault was not random, however they do continue to investigate.
