The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) has announced that it is cancelling trips to Vimy Ridge next year, citing travel advisories from the federal government.

The federal government’s website says that people should exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to Belgium and France, citing that the threat of terrorism remains high in both countries.

Nick Manning of the WRDSB says that because of the advisory the board decided to cancel the trip.

“Any country now that has an elevated risk according to Travel Canada we’ve taken the decision to cancel those trips,” he says.

Manning says that approximately 100 students from schools across the board have made a $200 deposit. He says that they will make sure that every student will receive their deposit back.

The cancellation of the trip to Vimy Ridge is leaving some students disappointed.

“It meant a lot to me because it was for Vimy Ridge, it has my great-grandfathers name on it,” says Grace Ditzend a student at Bluevale Collegiate Institute.

Manning says that they will keep the decision under review, saying that the board wanted to make sure that it could take advantage of any cancellation policies.
