It took more than nine months, but work can finally resume on a water main project in Guelph’s west end.
Last September, crews working on the Paisley-Clythe water main project – on an old landfill site near Wellington Street and the Hanlon Parkway – discovered eight drums, some of which contained unknown chemicals.
Tests showed that the chemicals were substances normally used in fuels, solvents and manufacturing processes.
Over time, a total of 42 170-litre barrels were found at the site. City officials say most of them were empty.
All were removed and sent for analysis.
Cleanup work began at the site in May, and city officials say tests have been done to ensure that soil quality hasn’t been negatively affected.
Looking ahead, some lanes on Wellington will be closed between the Hanlon and Edinburgh Road in July due to the project.
Work will then move along the Eramosa River, between Gordon Street and Victoria Road.
